South Wales rock trio Häxan return with their highly anticipated EP ‘Death Of Me’, a blistering follow up to their acclaimed debut album, ‘White Noise.’
Produced by Grammy nominated Romesh Dodangoda (Motörhead, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet For My Valentine), Häxan’s new EP showcases the band’s evolution, blending rock and metal influences – bigger, bolder and more intense. From the uncompromising title track ‘Death Of Me’, to new single release ‘Thirteenth Hour’, Häxan delivers big riffs, big vocals and driving energy, setting the stage for what’s to come.
Having seen Häxan in action at Call of the Wild Festival in 2024, I was immediately drawn in by their delivery of heavy riffs and outstanding vocal tone, and have been a fan ever since. I was very keen to hear this new EP, so let’s dive in!
The metal influence is at the forefront with opening and title track ‘Death Of Me’ delivering a fast paced adrenaline rush, laced with smooth licks and riffs expertly blended into a belter of an opening EP track.
‘Siren’ – oh my gosh! The overall vocal was like a rock siren was drawing you in, this track has a punk feel with the quintessential drum line and the riffs are so damn catchy complemented with the drop downs, giving it that bad ass metal tone.
These ladies are really tearing it up. The guitar solo hits hard and the addition of vocal harmonies is so good!
‘Thirteenth Hour’ my absolute favourite of this EP! It has everything I could have wanted and more. This is so so powerful! Everything perfect! I feel this is a true showcase of their talent. It is haunting and beautiful! Laced with tones of goth rock, the instrumental breakdown coming in around the middle section of the track, leads up to an absolute explosion of an ending! WOW!!
‘Burn Alive’ is straight out of Salem! This was metal as hell! The riffs absolutely electric and the vocal so haunting!
‘Fight Fire With Fire’ with connotations of not only back when the witch trials were common practice but also having to fight through challenges life may face. Very clever. The high notes on this and the melodic breakdown make it an extremely stand out track!
‘Collide’ is the closing track of the EP, starting slower in pace, yet still very melodic, however it builds into a crashing crescendo with percussion precision that makes it a truly incredible closing track.
This dynamic trio never fall short of delivering. I feel everything has been cranked up to 1000! I know these ladies can play and are incredibly talented, so being able to experience this before the official release was an honour!
Everything is extremely cohesive and well blended, from the bass line and drums to the impressive guitar riffs and the vocal harmonies some of the best I’ve heard.
I love it when bands crank it up. This is one heck of an EP and one that I genuinely feel deserves its praise. *****
