Blacklist Union return with new single ‘Mississippi Moonhound’ — a swampy, swaggering anthem delivering a powerful blast of wild and untamed rock ‘n’ roll. The new single captures the feeling of being haunted by your past while howling into the night for something more. Blacklist Union’s new album ‘Slay the Dragon’ is scheduled for September 2025 and will be their sixth full-length release.
Blacklist Union have built a reputation on their explosive live shows and unapologetically bold sound. Their previous record, ‘Letters from the Psych Ward’, racked up over two million streams, setting the stage for the band’s new album.
GRTR caught up with frontman Tony West for a chat…
“Mississippi Moonhound” has been described as a swampy, swaggering anthem—what was the emotional or spiritual state you were in when writing this track?
The last two records I’ve written after leaving the Amazon jungle in Peru having spent time there with the Indians. So I was in a hyper spiritual state for the last two records, especially.
You’ve worked closely with Christopher Johnson for years—what makes him such a perfect creative partner for Blacklist Union?
Chris Johnson is the sixth member of Blacklist Union and always has been. He’s like a brother to me and he allows me to be me and do my thing.
How would you say upcoming album Slay the Dragon differs from Letters from the Psych Ward in terms of sound, inspiration and vibes?
We have our same niche sound. I think we’ve created our own sound. And the music just keeps evolving. I think this one is more tribal and deeper.
Your music has never chased trends, but rather carved its own lane—how do you define success in today’s rock scene?
Successes at the end of the day is to say yourself I didn’t sell out to trends or suits or what’s hip or cool at the moment
There’s a lot of raw energy in your work—what role does live performance play in maintaining that intensity?
Well, the live performance is where it’s at. We bring the fire live.
